Over the years, the books have inspired many TV adaptations, including the current series on CBBC and Netflix as well as the touring stage play The Worst Witch Live. The first book came out in 1974 but Murphy’s fabulous illustrations and funny stories of boarding school life continue to delight millions of readers today.

The Worst Witch books were written by much-loved British author Jill Murphy when she was just sixteen years old, inspired by her own experiences at boarding school. Mildred and her best friends, sensible Maud and jokey Enid, are always in trouble, but their good-natured loyalty means that they (mostly) manage to save the day. Her spells go wrong, her broomstick crashes and she even turns teacher’s pet Ethel Hallow into a pig. Whilst Miss Cackle the headmistress tolerates Mildred’s madcap behaviour, her form teacher Miss Hardbroom is less impressed. Mildred is well-intentioned but clumsy, constantly getting into scrapes and quickly earning a reputation as the worst witch in the school. If you'd like to read more of Mildred's disastrous adventures at Miss Cackle's Academy The Worst Witch, A Bad Spell for the Worst Witch, The Worst Witch All at Sea, The Worst Witch Saves the Day, The Worst Witch to the Rescue and The Worst Witch and the Wishing Star are also available from Puffin and are perfect for children aged 5-9.Mildred Hubble is a pupil at Miss Cackle’s Academy for Witches – a boarding school that looks more like a prison, with grey turrets and pupils clad in black uniforms with hob-nailed boots.

Jill Murphy also written and illustrated several award-winning picture books for younger children. The Worst Witch was first published in 1974 and this much-loved classic has been enjoyed by readers for more than 30 years. Jill Murphy started putting books together (literally with a stapler), when she was six. Summer term at Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches has just begun and disaster-prone Mildred Hubble is in deep trouble again - all because of the new girl, Enid Nightshade, who isn't nearly as placid as she looks. 'I wonder,' said Miss Cackle, 'if there is any hope for you in this Academy, Mildred.' The Worst Witch Strikes Again by Jill Murphy is the second book in the classic Worst Witch series starring the lovable but disaster-prone Mildred Hubble - possibly the worst witch ever to go to Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches.
